Novo Nordisk's Field Leaders Were Losing a Week to Excel.
They Aren't Anymore.

Field leaders at one of the world's top global pharmaceutical companies faced a recurring challenge every Monday: identifying what changed last week in the field, why, and what to do about it. Answering this series of questions took 8–10 days due to the manual nature of stitching Rx data from one warehouse to claims from another to field activity from the CRM.

By the time analysis was ready, the window to act had passed and new questions had already piled up. Instead of incremental fixes, the Novo Nordisk team took a fundamentally different approach — building a pharma intelligence layer on top of Snowflake that unlocked massive efficiencies across numerous use cases.

Every Monday morning, the same question — and a 10-day wait for the answer.

The Challenge
  • A week per answer, in the analyst-team queue. Each Monday-morning question came back 8–10 days later — across data engineering, BI, and analyst hand-offs. By the time the answer landed, the chance to act on a formulary change or counter a competitor move had typically passed.
  • 3+ BI tools per question. Qlik for Rx, Tableau or Power BI for claims, Excel for the gaps. Field leaders switched between tools just to assemble one view.
  • No single source of truth. Numbers diverged by team. Reconciling spreadsheets ate more time than deciding what to do.

The Three Layers That Replaced the 10-Day Cycle

The fundamentally different approach was structural. Novo Nordisk's team built three layers, stacked in order: a governed Snowflake foundation, the pharma intelligence layer that defines the business once, and a surface where field leaders meet the work. Each layer depends on the one below. The intelligence layer is what most BI architectures skip — and it's where the efficiencies compound. Built once, every new commercial question runs against the same definitions instead of becoming a new analyst project.

The Data Foundation

Built data foundation on Snowflake. Now Rx, claims, payer, field activity, patient, and CRM data flow into one governed warehouse on regular refreshes. Security and governance are enforced once, not in each downstream tool.

The Intelligence Layer

The semantic layer is where Tellius defines the pharma business. Metrics like Trx, NBRx, and on-target call are set here and inherited everywhere downstream. Row-level security, data lineage, and MLR-aware routing live here too, not separately in each tool.
